Green Grants Grow: More Funding for Community Groups Across Wales

Funding and grants increase for community interest groups and organisations across Wales.

Three funding pots are either opening or expanding for community transport groups and grassroots organisations in Wales. To be eligible your initiative must be driven by a commitment to greener more sustainable operations/action.

1. Sustainable Steps Wales – Egin Grants

The Sustainable Steps Wales – Egin Grants are offered by The National Lottery Community Fund. Applicants must first receive support from the Egin mentoring programme before applying.

Maximum grant through the Egin mentoring grant has mor than double from £15,000 to £35,000 from 22 July 2026. The funds are available to support community-led projects that engage people with climate change and help them live more sustainably.  These initiatives should enable environmental impact reduction, improve accessibility, or support the shift toward greener community transport solutions.

Key details:

  • Location: Wales-based projects only
  • Amount: £100–£35,000
  • Decision timeframe: Around 4 weeks
  • Status: Open to applications now

The funders are particularly interested in projects that consider their impact on nature, improve community wellbeing, strengthen local relationships, and are willing to share learnings with others.

2. Small Eco Awards

A brand-new grant offering £300 to £20,000 for community groups taking practical action for the environment. This could include improving green spaces, reducing waste, supporting climate resilience, or helping create greener, healthier communities — open to any group with a practical idea, not just environmental organisations.

Groups can hold a Small Eco Awards grant at the same time as a National Lottery Awards for All grant.

3. People and Places — bigger grants from 9 September 2026

For groups with larger-scale community projects — including community transport initiatives — maximum grant amounts are increasing from 9 September 2026:

  • Medium grants: rising from £100,000 to £150,000
  • Large grants: rising from £500,000 to £700,000

Organisations with an active application under the current criteria can withdraw and resubmit on or after 9 September to apply for the increased amount. It’s recommended to speak with the Fund’s team first to discuss the most appropriate grant level for your project.
