Somerset Council expands fleet with on-demand accessible buses for Taunton and Wellington

Somerset's new Digital Slinky buses are fully accessible, and offer a handy alternative for people needing to get to the shops, work, appointments or social visits if a bus service is not easily available, or they just want to leave the car at home.

Somerset Council has expanded its transport offering with the introduction of new on-demand buses designed to provide flexible, accessible travel across Taunton and Wellington.

The council has added six diesel Cityline minibuses and one electric Cityline vehicle to support its growing Digital Slinky service—an innovative, demand-responsive transport solution for Somerset residents.

EVM UK & Ireland supplied the low-floor, fully accessible minibuses, helping to future-proof local transport services.

The Cityline is a 16-seater low-floor minibus with a strong track record, having been trusted by councils, community groups, and public transport operators for over 12 years. The model is available with both diesel and electric powertrains, giving operators flexibility as they transition toward greener fleets.

The new vehicles are equipped with features that prioritise accessibility and passenger comfort, including:

  • Low-floor design for easy boarding
  • Dedicated wheelchair space
  • Wide double-door entrance for improved access
  • On-board driver information systems
  • Digital destination displays
  • Integrated ticketing systems

These enhancements ensure a smoother, more inclusive travel experience for all passengers.

Somerset Council are said to be delighted with the additions to their fleet which will provide ‘on demand’ buses and flexible service for Taunton and Wellington.

The Digital Slinky trial has proven to be a very popular service. We want to make it as simple as possible for people to get around in Somerset. “Our Digital Slinky buses are easy to access, just use the app and book at least an hour before you want to travel. So, if there’s no bus nearby, or you just want to leave the car at home, Digital Slinky is a simple, flexible way to get to work, the shops or appointments.
Councillor Richard Wilkins
Lead Member for Transport and Waste, Somerset Council

By combining on-demand technology, accessible vehicle design, and low-emission options, Somerset Council is taking a significant step toward a more inclusive and sustainable public transport network.
